Lagos Life Billboards and Sea Plots: How In-Game Advertising Works

How Lagos Life billboards work: ₦250,000 digital boards rotating 15-second ads, ₦500 sea plots on the lagoon, Flutterwave checkout, and the rules for player ads.

The first thing you notice on the map is not the venues — it is the advertising. Purple mega-screens along the lagoon edge, ad boards strung along the mainland roads, and hundreds of small ads floating on the open water. All of it is live, all of it is clickable, and all of it is bought with real money — this is the game’s main business, running since launch week.

The two ad products

Product Where Price (7 days) What you get
Digital board Main roads — Yaba, Lagos Island, Ikeja and more ₦250,000 (about $175) A 15-second slot in a rotation of ~30 ads
Sea Plot The lagoon between the Mainland houses and Lekki ₦500 per plot (about $0.35) Your own patch, any size from 1×1 up

Both figures are straight from the in-game booking sheets. Launch-week reporting by TechCabal counted 244 ads across 40 boards in three cities, and Techpoint recorded far cheaper early rates (roadside boards from ₦5,000) — the price list has climbed several times since, so treat both numbers as current snapshots rather than constants.

Digital boards: ON AIR, 15 seconds at a time

Tap any board on the map and a sheet slides up. “Billboard 2 · Yaba road · digital” carries an ON AIR badge and a plain-language media kit: 29 ads take turns, 15 s each — a full loop takes about seven minutes, and your ad shares the screen with everyone else who paid that week.

The roster is not just small shops. During our session the rotation carried ZUKO! — Fireboy DML’s album campaign, linked to the official music site and running alongside the city-wide Find ZUKO! event, plus a real-estate academy recruiting students. Big-brand campaigns like that one tie directly into in-game events such as the daily gem hunt.

Tapping a running ad opens an interstitial: “You’re leaving Lagos Life — this ad opens a website we don’t run. Only continue if you trust it.” Confirm, and the advertiser’s real website opens. Every board also has an “Add your ad to this board” button that jumps you into the same booking flow as the sea plots below.

Sea Plots: the lagoon is one big classifieds board

Open the map, tap More, then Sea Plots, and the game describes its cheapest ad product plainly: “Rent a patch of Lagos water · ₦500 a plot for 7 days.” The pitch continues: “Your ad floats on the open water between the Mainland houses and Lekki, where every player looks.”

What loads is a grid of the lagoon. Blue hatching is open water you can rent; thumbnails are ads already live; the big yellow blocks are held out for larger placements. You tap an anchor point, set the patch size with the Wide and Tall steppers, and the price updates per plot — 2×2 is 4 plots for ₦2,000 (about $1.40), 4×2 is ₦4,000. If your patch overlaps anything, the sheet tells you “Part of that patch is taken. Tap somewhere else.”

Scroll the grid and you see who is actually buying: a Marvel placement sits next to Flutterwave’s own “Build once. Reach the world.” banner, ride-hailing driver recruitment, and dozens of one-plot WhatsApp and Instagram shop ads. One advertiser even runs analytics tags on their link — this water is treated as genuine media inventory, not a novelty.

Booking an ad, step by step

  1. Open the map → More → Sea Plots (or tap any billboard and use Add your ad to this board).
  2. Tap a free patch of blue water and set the size with Wide / Tall.
  3. Confirm with Use these N plots.
  4. Fill the form: a picture (“logo, flyer or product” — wide 2:1 images look best), a title of up to 40 characters under “What are you selling?”, and the destination link — “Players who tap your plot go here (WhatsApp, Instagram, your site…)”.
  5. Choose ₦ Naira or $ USD and pay. The board’s promise: it “goes live as soon as you pay.”

The rules of the board

The checkout fine print is worth reading, because the enforcement is real: “Ads that break our rules (scams, adult content, coins or tokens, selling accounts, or pretending to be Lagos Life) are taken down without a refund.” Note the last one — impersonating the game itself is a bannable ad category, which fits the wider pattern of fake apps and clone scams around a hit game. If you are advertising something, it needs to be your genuine product with a real destination link, because every tap passes through that “You’re leaving” warning first.

Why the city sells billboards at all

Advertising is a headline revenue line for this studio — launch-week coverage was literally built around how ad sales pay for the servers — and the design shows it. There are no forced ad breaks on your screen: the ads live in the world, on boards you can ignore. The one mass-message channel that is free, the governor’s weekly announcement, is earned at the ballot box rather than bought, and regular players cannot broadcast at all — stranger messages simply wait in a request folder.

For players, the practical takeaway is small but real: that lagoon you keep gliding over is a marketplace where real businesses compete for attention, the prices move like everything else in this economy (see the money-making guide for the player side of it), and the venues those ads point to are the same map locations you already use. And if a floating ad ever promises free coins or an APK download, treat it exactly like the scams we document in our fake apps guide — the game’s own rules say that ad should not exist, but nobody refunds your tap.

FAQ

Do Lagos Life billboards cost real money?
Yes. Both the digital road boards and Sea Plots check out through Flutterwave in real currency — naira or US dollars. The naira in your in-game wallet does not pay for ads: a 2×2 sea patch books at ₦2,000 (about $1.40) for seven days, and a main-road digital board lists at ₦250,000 (about $175).
How much is a billboard in Lagos Life?
The digital boards on main roads listed at ₦250,000 for 7 days in our test, which buys a 15-second slot in a rotation of roughly 30 ads. Sea Plots are the budget end: ₦500 per plot (about $0.35) for 7 days, and you choose the patch size — a 2×2 patch is ₦2,000.
Can any player place an ad in Lagos Life?
Yes — it is fully self-service. Pick a spot on the water or a board, upload a picture, add a title and link, then pay through Flutterwave. Ads that break the rules (scams, adult content, coins or tokens, selling accounts, or impersonating the game) are taken down without a refund.
What happens when you tap a billboard in Lagos Life?
An interstitial first warns 'You're leaving Lagos Life' and shows the destination domain. Only after you confirm does it open the advertiser's real website in a new tab — the same flow a multinational's campaign uses as a small WhatsApp shop.
