Does Lagos Life Play Itself? Free Will, Auto-Work and Playing While Away

Lagos Life half-plays itself: Free will recovers needs, auto-work attends shifts and businesses pay out daily — but missions, money and promotions need you.

Lagos Life runs on a live clock — game time moves at real time whether you are touching the game or not — so the fair question is how much of it plays itself. The answer, verified in-game on 13 October 2026 and cross-checked against every community source we trust: the survival layer is automated, the ambition layer is not. Your character feeds and recovers itself; your career, your money moves and your Rep stay exactly where you left them.

Free will: what the game does on its own

Open the Sim panel → Settings and scroll to Free will — a single toggle, on by default. With it on, your character runs its own recovery loop. We watched it live: after our character Passed Out from an empty Energy bar, it got back up on its own and restored Energy to 95% and Hygiene to 100% without a single click, then started “Dance to Burna” — an activity it picked by itself — to refill Fun, and its mood climbed from Fine to Very Happy.

What free will covers, from observation: sleeping, washing, eating at home, and low-stakes leisure like dancing. It does not buy things, apply to jobs, claim rewards or make any decision that costs or earns serious money — across an idle hour our wallet did not move by a single Naira.

Go automatically: shifts attend themselves

Once you are employed, the Jobs app grows a “Your job” card with a “Go automatically” checkbox — ours shipped checked. When a shift is due, a danfo pulls up wherever your character is and drives it to work, no click needed; the shift completes on its own as long as you stay the first five minutes, and the payout pops at the end (“Back from Work — you earned ₦8,600”).

The Your job card in the Jobs app: Intern I, Tech, ₦8,600 per shift, with the Go automatically checkbox ticked

Three boundaries matter:

  • Uncheck the box and you are back to the manual flow — start shifts yourself from the Jobs app between 06:00 and 21:59 on a workday, one shift per game day.
  • Auto-attendance only covers attendance. The promotion rule still needs 100% performance at a shift’s end, which means doing the in-shift work actions yourself — an empty chair earns no stars. See how promotions work.
  • There is a Quit job button on the same card, so the first career you pick is not a life sentence.

What the game never does alone

Needs your hands Happens without you
Daily Hustle missions (up to ₦19k/day) Eating, sleeping, washing at home
Lagos Stories (+110–300 Rep) Recovery after Passing Out
Promotions (work actions in shift) Attending shifts (if Go automatically is on)
Spending: rent, LAPO, bonds, land, businesses Payouts landing at shift end / business settlement
Free will toggle itself Leisure pick (dancing and similar)

The split is clean: maintenance is automated, ambition is manual. The Goals panel — lifetime dream, Rep ladder, missions — never moves a point without a player.

Can I earn Naira while away?

Some channels pay on schedules, others only pay when you show up:

  • Businesses (the Invest app) settle every evening around 6 PM after running costs — community tables note a bad day can lose money, so this is passive-ish, not risk-free.
  • Land plots yield weekly, and Reserve Bonds mature after their 7 days — both accrue without attention.
  • Jobs pay per shift: auto-attendance keeps these landing once a day.
  • Hustle missions, stories and gigs are the fastest Naira in the game and the least automatic — they expire daily.

The game is always-online, so “away” means the tab is open and you are not touching it in everything above. Whether anything ticks while the tab is closed is untested — treat offline progress as unknown, as the community wikis do.

The bottom line for busy players

Ignore Lagos Life for a day and nothing breaks: your character feeds itself, attends its shift and wakes up from any collapse. Come back daily — or even every other day — for the hustle missions, rent day and the election cycle, and the automation carries the rest. It is a game about a city that keeps living; it just refuses to live your ambitions for you.

FAQ

Does Lagos Life play itself while I'm away?
Partly. With Free will on (Settings, on by default) your character recovers needs at home and picks its own leisure, and with Go automatically checked your character attends work shifts without you. But daily missions, story challenges, spending and promotions never happen on their own.
Will my character go to work automatically?
Yes if Go automatically is checked on your job card in the Jobs app — ours shipped checked. A danfo arrives at shift time with no extra click. Unchecking it returns you to the manual flow: open Jobs and start the shift yourself between 06:00 and 21:59 on a workday.
What happens if I ignore the game for a day?
Needs decay slowly (a few points an hour), your character can Pass Out when Energy empties, and Free will recovers it at home. No Naira is lost and nothing dies — but daily missions expire, and a day without shifts or hustles is a day with no income.
Can I earn Naira while not playing?
Some channels pay on schedules: businesses settle every evening around 6 PM (they can lose money on a bad day), land yields compound weekly and Reserve Bonds mature after 7 days. Jobs pay per shift only, and there is no other verified idle income.
