Nepo Baby vs LAPO Baby: Which Start Is Better in Lagos Life?

Every Lagos Life account gets one permanent birth-lottery start: a ₦500,000 Nepo head start or a ₦60,000 LAPO loan with 25% faster learning. How they compare.

The very first thing Lagos Life asks of you is the one thing it does not let you decide: the birth lottery. One account, one permanent start — and the two starts play like different games. This page compares them line by line and gives each a plan. For the steps around the lottery itself, see the first-week walkthrough.

What is the birth lottery?

After character creation, your account is permanently assigned one of two origins — Nepo Baby or LAPO Baby. Community testers have confirmed it cannot be rerolled, including by starting fresh runs; it is tied to the account, not the character. The names are the joke: a “Nepo Baby” is born into money; “LAPO” is a Nigerian microfinance lender.

What does a Nepo Baby start include?

Nepo Baby
Starting cash ₦500,000 allowance
Debt None
Home Furnished Lekki Phase 1 apartment
Transport A car, from day one
Job Branch Manager I (Banking, Rank 3) already assigned — ₦27,400/shift
Skills Charisma at level 2, everything else 0

A fresh-account check on 14 October 2026 verified all of the above ingame — including a quirk: because the flat, the car and the ₦500k already clear the ₦1m Lekki Landlord threshold, a Nepo Baby can spawn with their lifetime dream instantly marked “Achieved” (+20✨).

The Nepo track starts at the top of the housing ladder with the commuting solved. The risk is the opposite of money: with no pressure, it is easy to never train a skill — and the top of every career ladder is gated by skill levels, not cash.

What does a LAPO Baby start include?

LAPO Baby
Starting cash ₦60,000 loan (₦72,000 to repay)
Debt ₦12,000 per week
Home Rent in Mushin or Yaba, student room possible
Job Find your own first job
Edge Hustle skill at level 2+, all skills learn 25% faster

The in-game goals panel tracks the debt for you — remaining balance, weekly payment, and a pay-it-all-early option — which we verified in a logged-in session on 11 October 2026.

Which start is actually better?

For the first two weeks, Nepo — obviously. Long-term, it depends on how you play:

  • Casual sessions, a few shifts a week → Nepo. The buffer means you will never face rent day scared, and the assigned Banking job starts at Rank 3 (Branch Manager I) paying ₦27,400 per shift with no gate.
  • Regular play with a plan → LAPO. The 25% faster learning is the single best permanent advantage in the game: every level-3 skill gate (Medicine, Aviation, Oil & Gas — see the salary list) arrives days sooner, and Hustle 2 on day one unlocks resale gigs immediately.
  • Either way → the ladder is the same. Both starts end at the same top-rank salaries; origin only changes the runway.

How do I survive the LAPO repayment?

The debt is a rhythm, not a cliff — ₦12,000 weekly against entry wages of ₦6,400–10,100 per shift means two completed shifts cover the week:

  1. Rent the cheapest room offered (often the UNILAG room at ₦1,200 — see homes and rent).
  2. Work every game day at any no-gate job; finish shifts fully — leaving early guts your pay (money guide).
  3. Fill waiting time with buka or load-carrying gigs; walk, don’t cab.
  4. Spend early skill effort on Hustle or Coding — both scale your side income while you train toward a gated career.
  5. When a career with a level-3 gate opens, take it: gated base pay (₦14,800–18,300) roughly doubles your repayment capacity overnight.

The climb is real and visible in the Career tab: five ranks from Intern to CTO, each promotion gated on ending a shift at 100% performance. Our test account’s ladder — Intern I at ₦8,600 per shift, Intern II next at ₦9,000 — is the LAPO path in one screen:

The Career tab in the Sim panel: Tech Rank 1 of 5, Intern I at ₦8,600 per shift, an Intern-to-CTO progress bar and 74% performance

Can I switch or reroll my start?

No — but the game does let you change your lifetime dream once a week, and your career at any time. Origin is fixed; everything you do with it is not. Players documenting both starts agree the lottery matters far less than the first ten days of habits — which is exactly what the first-week guide is for.

FAQ

Can I choose or reroll my birth lottery result?
No. The start is assigned once per account and stays fixed — even new runs on the same account keep it. Pick your housing and career around what you drew, not around what you wish you had drawn.
Which start ends up richer?
The Nepo head start is comfortable immediately, but the LAPO learning bonus (skills 25% faster, Hustle level 2 on day one) compounds: gated careers that need level-3 skills arrive days earlier, and top-gated salaries run to ₦96,000 per shift. Skilled LAPO players routinely overtake casual Nepo players.
What happens if I miss a LAPO repayment?
The exact penalty is not yet documented by any source we trust. The safe play is structural: treat the ₦12,000 weekly payment as rent — always held a week ahead. The in-game goals panel shows the remaining balance and a pay-early option.
